Here’s a wee writeup for the techie pub quiz we organised for Tues, 14th Dec, 2010.
With 11 tables of geeks from all backgrounds, ranging from Python Ireland (*cheers), Ruby Ireland, Ubuntu Ireland, Girl Geeks, TOG.ie, Red Brick and more. If anyone was not present upstairs, the resident tux (Declan in a life size penguin outfit), would gather any techie/geeky people amongst the pub’s patrons downstairs. Fair play to our resident tux, he wore it the whole night (and even walked home in it)!
Our main quizmaster, Jeffrey, kicked off the quiz, with lols at certain questions i.e. DRY was mentioned twice in the acronym section. We were amazed that at least one group got the following “TQFTWRRGADOSRGT” which was the pub quiz title itself. There were some moments where the organisers had to pull out their smart phones (thank goodness for them) and double/triple-checked answers. You get hecklers as with all pub quiz, but techie hecklers is another thing entirely!
The most memorable moment has to be when “Is the Winner” (Python Ireland team) actually won… by a point. That point for each pacman ghost really helped pull “Girl Geeks” closer to them. “Is the Winner” contested their own answer which was incomplete but was given a mark, and we had a tie-breaker. Mick was quizmaster by then, “Is the Winner” was pretty sure they would have got it if the answer wasn’t shouted out by a guy who’s not in either teams in the tie-breaker.
The question which cost “Is the Winner”: What year was the Analytical Engine created? The answer was 1837, but they were a year off, and Girl Geek’s got it and they won. It was pretty hilarious and sort of tense.
Congrats to “Girl Geeks” (1st), “Is the Winner” (Python Ireland, 2nd) and “Ubuntu Ireland (3rd). We also had a charity that night, and we raised €160 for Focus Ireland.
Thanks to the following:-
- Karma Stone for hosting us and providing us free food.
- Apress, Blacknight, Jolt Online Gaming, Microsoft Ireland, National College Ireland, O’ Reilly, Python Ireland, Ruby Ireland for providing us with awesome prizes.
And finally to all those who came out on Tuesday night, I hope everyone had a brilliant time (the feedback was amazing)? A general concensus, another multi-user tech pub quiz next year. Result all round.
(I have photos, will put them up when I get a chance.)

Me personally, as long as the taxi driver knows how to get from A to B without getting lost and charging me for their lack of local area knowledge, I don’t care where they are from.
Think I mentioned this before last month. No harm mentioning again. ;-)
